Gunma

Gunma

Gunma Prefecture is located in the northwest corner of the Kanto region of Japan. It's capital is Maebashi. Surrounding Gunma are beautiful mountains which lie to the north and west. There are some major mountains in Gunma, including Mt. Akagi, Mt. Haruna, Mt. My?gi, Mt. Nikko-Shirane and Mt. Asama (located on the Nagano border). The first three are known as the "Three Mountains of Jomo."
Major rivers include the Tone River, the Agatsuma River, and the Karasu River. Gunma is one of the most popular hot-spring areas in Japan. There is a great variety of mineral-rich hot springs, including Kusatsu, Minakami and Ikaho. In these mountains and their nearby plateaus, golf, skiing, rafting and other outdoor activities are available for visitors to enjoy throughout the year.
There are many other natural attractions, too. In summer, plateaus such as Kazawa Yunommaru (Tsumagoi Village) are covered with hydrangeas. In fall, the mountain peaks and slopes are painted with the reds of mountain ash and maple and the yellows of beech and birch. Popular locations are Mt. Tanigawa (Minakami Town) and Oze. In winter, the plateaus become a paradise for skiers and snowboarders. Some ski resorts open from November until early May. Hot springs abound near every ski resort, where the outdoor baths and spring waters can be savored while taking in the surrounding vistas. There are numerous local foods to try, such as yakimanjyu (roasted buns), udon (wheat noodles), sake (rice wine), and onsen manjyu (hot-spring steamed buns). The area of Tomioka, Gunma is also proud of the Tomioka Silk Mill, which has been designated as a World Heritage site.

Kusatsu

Kusatsu is a wonderful hot-spring resort area known for it's high quality and abundant supply of fresh water. The Yubatake facility is the symbol of Kusatsu, and it courses with up to 4,000 liters of hot water per minute. After the sun goes down, Yubatake's illuminations conjure up a stunning and uniquely wonderful atmosphere.
The Yumomi experience is also available for guests. Yumomi is the method of cooling the hot-spring water that flows directly from the source. By stirring water with 1.8 meters long paddles, the hot-spring water cools to a suitable bathing temperature.
Visitors to Sai no Kawara can enjoy some distinctive scenery while soaking in the bubbling hot-spring water. Stone monuments line the walking trail, and an outdoor bath (the largest in Kusatsu) is located at the end of this path.
Mt. Shirane is featured as one of the "100 famous mountains of Japan" and is popular for it's attractive hiking trails.
For a long time, Kusatsu has also been an appealing destination for skiers. With it's views from an elevation of over 900 meters, it's great for beginners and experts alike. There are also indoor facilities available including Kusatsu Onsen Museum, the Baelz Memorial Hall, Kusatsu Tropical Greenhouse Dome, the Environment Experience Amusement Museum and the Kataoka Tsurutaro Museum.
